The journeyman electrician examination is a state-level licensing test that confirms you can work as a fully qualified electrician without direct supervision. It's usually administered after 4 to 5 years of registered apprenticeship — roughly 8,000 hours of on-the-job training plus 500–750 classroom hours, though the numbers shift by jurisdiction.
Pass the journeyman license exam and you can pull wire, install services, and run a crew under a master's permit. Fail it and you're back in the testing center 30 to 90 days later with a retake fee. Most states let you retake it as many times as needed, though a few cap attempts per year.
Here's where it gets state-specific. The journeyman license test is written and proctored by one of a few major testing organizations, and your state board picks which one.
PSI Services runs the exam in the majority of US states. The PSI journeyman electrician test is computer-based, delivered at dedicated PSI testing centers, and uses their standard interface — left pane shows the question, flag button for review, timer running top-right. The journeyman's electrical test is built around the NEC, with a consistent topic mix across most jurisdictions. Exact percentages shift by state, but the structure holds.
Roughly a third of the exam. Service and feeder load calcs (Article 220), conductor sizing and ampacity (Article 310 and Chapter 9 tables), voltage drop, box fill, conduit fill, and motor calculations (Article 430). These are the questions that separate people who pass on the first try from people who retake.
Most calc questions give you numbers and ask you to apply a formula, a table, or a demand factor. They're not trick questions — they just take time. Practice until you can set them up without hunting through the book.
Ohm's Law, power formulas, basic AC theory, series and parallel circuits, transformers. Theory questions are usually the fastest on the test — you either know the formula or you don't. No code lookup required.
Straight questions asking what the code says about a specific scenario. "Minimum burial depth for a direct-buried UF cable under a driveway" — that kind of thing. Chapter 3 (wiring methods) and Article 250 (grounding and bonding) dominate this section.
Chapter 3 in the NEC. Conduit types, cable types, when you can use what, support and securing rules, temperature ratings. Dry questions, but a lot of them.
Articles 210, 215, 220, 225, 230. Receptacle count on a 20-amp circuit, service size for dwellings and commercial buildings, feeder sizing, required disconnects. These blur with the calculation category.
Article 250. Historically the most-missed section on the exam. The language is dense, the definitions are precise, and the distinctions between grounded, grounding, bonded, and bonding matter. Spend extra time here.
Articles 500 and later cover hazardous locations, health care, motor fuel, swimming pools. A smaller share of the test, but worth at least one pass-through — the questions are narrow enough that a quick code lookup usually answers them.
A month of panicked studying the week before won't cut it. Here's a plan that works for most people:
Buy a fresh copy of the NEC edition your state has adopted — confirm with your state board, because not every state moves to the newest cycle immediately. Tab it with a pre-made tab set or your own. Tabs should cover Articles 210, 220, 225, 230, 240, 250, 310, 430, and Chapter 9 tables at minimum. Write short notes in the margins for tricky rules.
Work through service load calcs, conduit fill, voltage drop, and motor calcs until you can set them up fast. The goal is fluency, not memorization — you're going to look up the exact table, but you need to know which table and why.
This is the phase that closes the gap between "I know this stuff" and "I can do this stuff in three minutes."
